Judiciary must be independent for anti-corruption war to succeed — Analyst

A public affairs analyst, Mr Olusegun Bamishaye, said on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti that the Judiciary must enjoy full independence for government’s anti-corruption crusade to yield good dividends.

Bamishaye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that an independent judiciary, devoid of individual, government or political influence, would sustain the fight against corruption and other vices and also add value and integrity to the nation’s democracy.

He said that the EFCC and the ICPC, two of government’s anti-corruption agencies, also deserved adequate budgetary allocations for optimum performance.

“Strengthening the two anti-corruption agencies will equip them with the wherewithal to achieve effective prosecution of corruption cases pending in most courts.

“The same thing also applies to the quick dispensation of election petitions and tribunal cases from the High Courts to the Supreme Court,’’ he said.

Bamishaye said that the government’s anti-corruption war had highlighted some serious challenges in the capability of the courts to handle some corruption cases.

“The present administration’s anti-corruption war, which is gradually extending to every sector of the economy, is no doubt enough reason to strengthen our judicial system.

“The judiciary needs to be properly funded and given adequate manpower and an environment conducive to effective discharge of it functions to perform optimally

“This is very essential and critical in moving the nation forward politically and economically,’’ the analyst said.

Bamishaye also urged members of the Bench to proffer viable solutions, saying that such would guard against unwarranted distractions and undue influence in the discharge of their responsibilities.
