Naval officer drags man to court over alleged reckless driving, claims N3.7m damage

An FCT Magistrates Court sitting in Mpape had adjourned a case of alleged reckless driving brought before it.

In the case, Commodore E. O Omeje of the Nigeria Navy Headquarters, Abuja, is seeking an N3.7 million payment to repair his car.

The accident which was alleged to have been caused by one Mr Shidok Dennis, of No. 17, Arsenal Street, Phase 4, Suncity Estate within the Abuja metropolis was said to have happened sometimes in January 2017.

According to a First Information Report (FIR), Dennis, the driver in charge of a Toyota Tundra, with Reg. No. ABC 151 LX, drove along with the Herbert Macauley, War College, in a manner which resulted in the accident.

The FIR stated that the defendant, through the act, ran into a Mercedes Benz with Reg. No. ABJ 418 TY, driven by the Navy Commandant, and hit the vehicle from behind which cause damage to the vehicle.

According to the FIR, the Navy Commandant have demanded the sum of N3, 746, 015.70 to fix the alleged damage car.

The police charged Dennis with careless and inconsiderate driving contrary to Section 29 of the Road Traffic Act in January 2017.

At the resumed hearing, Chief Magistrate Mohammed Zubairu, adjourned the case, following the inability of the prosecution counsel, Mr Adeniyi Oyeyemi, to serve court processes.

Oyeyemi prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him to serve the defendant all court processes.

The prosecution also informed the court that the nominal complainant,
Commodore E. O Omeje of the Nigeria Navy Headquarters, Abuja, was not in court.

Oyeyemi also told the court that one of the prosecution’s witnesses was also not in court.

The defence counsel, Mr Wale Adegboye, did not object to the prayer for adjournment.

The prosecution alleged Dennis, of No. 17, Arsenal Street, Phase 4, Suncity Estate within the Abuja metropolis allegedly drove a Toyota Tundra, with Reg. No. ABC 151 LX, on the Herbert Macauley, in a careless and inconsiderable manner and hit the complainant’s Mercedes Benz with Reg. No. ABJ 418 TY.

According to the FIR, the Navy Commandant demanded N3.7 million to fix the alleged damaged vehicle.
