BREAKING: US Congress formally certifies Joe Biden US President
President Joe Biden of the United States of America

The United States joint congress has officially declared Joe Biden as President of the United States of America.

This brings to a close a long, troubled and, at times, violent road from the Tuesday, November 3, 2020 presidential election to the January 20, 2021 swearing-in date of Donald Trump’s successor.

However, once the counting of Vermont’s three electoral votes put Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris over the 270-threshold needed to win the presidency, the wait was over.

Reacting to the Congress’ announcement, Donald Trump said there will be an ‘orderly transition’ of power, although he refused to condemn the violent mob who stormed the US capitol on Wednesday, during which four people were killed.

Trump, in a statement, said he did not agree with the election result but would stand down peacefully.

He said: “Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless, there will be an orderly transition on January 20.”
